What's Outside is my ongoing practice of collecting leaves during walks, scanning them and tracing their silhouettes into vectors. Using a cutting machine, I then cut the leaf silhouettes out of magazines, comics, old documents and prints turned to scraps. Installed, the leaves are dispersed in piles on the floor and I shine an amber light onto them, reminiscent of the streetlights. The leaves have since been incorporated into a number of other projects and collaborative works, including Sotoba Sotoba Komachi, Mercua, Uncommon Times at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and more recently, Scarecrow at the Steppenwolf Theater, with performance company Every house has a door.
